Lets take, arguably, our main characters from the 1st movies of each trilogy. But I still maintain the characters (however badly acted) were still more interesting and relate-able than the prequel characters. The prequels were never going to be as good as the originals to me and I completely own and accept that. When he got chopped up, burned, and had the mask lowered onto his face in Episode III, I felt nothing. When he died for real in Episode VI, I felt sorry for him. When I heard Luke's father was murdered in Episode IV, I felt sorry for him. What could have been an epic tale of the truly tragic fall into darkness of a great man became the rather mundane tale of how a really lousy person made the short leap to the Dark Side. A short tempered murderer who would cut down anyone in his path and whose violence was only partially mitigated by his very dysfunctional love for Padme. By the time he'd reached adulthood he was a terrible person. He was a spoiled, petulant, arrogant brat who was born a slave but grew up as a special Jedi. The good man buried deep beneath the mask was revealed, and he died not as Vader, but as Anakin.Įpisodes I, II, and III were supposed to be the story of how this good man fell from grace, but Anakin in these movies never quite lived up to the reputation he'd earned in Episodes IV, V, and VI.
Too much cgi in star wars episode 9 movie#
When faced with the choice of destroying his son, Darth Vader - hands down the most menacing movie villain in a generation - was redeemed. Even when Luke was captured by the Emperor on Endor, he could sense the "good" in his father.

In Return of the Jedi, we were told (by Obi Wan as a ghost) that Luke's father had been a good man who had been corrupted by the Dark Side. At the end of that film we were left with the question of why. In Empire, we learned (spoiler!) that Luke's father was not in fact murdered. He was betrayed and murdered.a tragic end. In Star Wars (what is now known as Episode IV, A New Hope), we're led to believe that Luke's father was "the best star-pilot in the galaxy," and a "good friend" to Obi Wan. I don't think they're "awful," but I'll stick by my take on why they're disappointing:
